Evacuation for People with Disabilities (Paterson)

After an evacuation is ordered:

• Check on people with special needs during an evacuation.  A buddy system, in which people with disabilities arrange for volunteers to alert them and assist them in an emergency, is a good method.

• Always ask someone with a disability how you can help before attempting any rescue technique or giving assistance.  Ask how he or she can best be assisted or moved and whether there are any special considerations or items that need to come with the person.

• If the situation is life threatening, call Public Safety 973 684-5403 or Dial 911 and state your name, location and area involved to the office personnel or the police dispatcher.
There are designated areas of safe refuge throughout the main Paterson Campus complex.  These areas are for non-ambulatory and handicapped individuals to report to and await assistance on exiting the building.  Each area is identified by a sign with a handicapped person icon.  Each of the main campus’ multi-story buildings is equipped with an Evacu-Trac emergency evacuation chair for use in the evacuation of handicapped persons.
