About ESL Program

The English as a Second Language Program offers special English language instruction for non-native speakers of English. Entering students must take a placement exam for appropriate placement in one of five level of language mastery. Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills are developed to help students attain their personal and academic goals.

The program consists of 16 courses, 14 required and two electives, spread over five levels of language proficiency. Each level, with the exception of the most advanced, is comprised of three skill-based courses: Writing (ESLW), Reading and Oral Communication (ESLR), and Grammar (ESLG). Specific course descriptions, curricula and syllabi have been developed and are revised regularly. Although the emphasis in each of these classes is different, the curriculum and course contents lend themselves to integration of skills, e.g., writing is a requirement to all the reading and grammar courses. In addition to the required core courses, students are encouraged to enroll in electives in speaking/pronunciation (ESLS) courses at beginning (002) and intermediate levels to provide them with more practice in the English language. They also may take keyboarding for ESL students(CIS001), where they are introduced to using computers for writing.

To give ESL Students an opportunity to earn credit while they are developing their language and academic skills, specific sections of regular college-level courses are paired with sections of advanced ESL reading courses. Currently, introductory courses in Computing, Psychology and Sociology are being paired with ESL reading classes.

To supplement classroom instruction and facilitate language learning, the ESL program provides two "smart classrooms", multimedia labs, and tutorial labs for grammar and writing. In addition, personal, academic, and employment counseling services are available to all ESL students.

To encourage ESL students to continue their college education and to recognize their achievement in the program, the ESL Department annually presents two internal awards: an ESL Award for Program Completion and an ESL Award for Language Competency.
